How to switch QC35 II between your Mac and iPhone

The QC35 II remembers the devices it has been paired with and can stay connected to two of them at the same time. That's what makes moving between a Mac and an iPhone easy, once you know how it behaves.

Short answer: keep both connected and play from whichever one you're using. To move the headphones on purpose, connect them from the other device's Bluetooth settings, or use Send To in Lull from the Mac.

Two connections at once

Pair the headphones with both the Mac and the iPhone. While they're connected to both, pause on one device and press play on the other, and the headphones follow.

Moving them from the other device

To bring the headphones to a device they aren't connected to, open Bluetooth settings on that device and choose them there.

Handing them over from the Mac with Lull

In Lull, open the ⋯ menu and choose Send To. It lists the other devices the headphones remember. Pick one and Lull:

  1. pauses what's playing on the Mac, if anything is (macOS asks once for Accessibility access so Lull can press the play/pause key);
  2. asks the headphones to connect to that device;
  3. stays connected too if there's a free slot, or lets go of the Mac if both slots are in use.

If the other device is out of range or has Bluetooth off, the Mac keeps the headphones and Lull tells you why.

There's also Hand Off on Sleep: when your Mac goes to sleep, Lull asks the headphones to join the most recent other device, so you can walk away and keep listening on your phone. It's best effort and off by default.

Lull is coming soon for macOS 14 or later, at $2.99 for launch. One email on launch day, nothing else.
